Whitfield: 'Pelosi's Healthcare Bill is Wrong Medicine for Our Nation'
November 5, 2009
WASHINGTON - Thousands of concerned American citizens, including many from Kentucky, descended on the U.S. Capitol today to voice their opposition to sweeping healthcare reform legislation being championed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) met with residents of the First Congressional District who traveled to Washington to attend today's event and spoke out about his concerns over this legislation.
"The thousands of Americans who attended today's event represent the millions more across this country who stand firmly opposed to a government-run healthcare system," Whitfield said. "While we can all agree that changes need to be made to our current healthcare system, Speaker Pelosi's plan will only serve to decrease the quality of care Kentuckians receive while increasing prices. This is the wrong plan for our nation and I urge Speaker Pelosi to heed the calls of the American people and work with Members on both sides of the aisle to craft a new bill."
An event at the U.S. Capitol today, called "Healthcare House Call on Washington," brought together thousands of constituents from across the country, including many from Kentucky, to protest healthcare legislation recently introduced by Speaker Pelosi.
Last week, H.R. 3962 the Affordable Health Care for America Act was introduced by Speaker Pelosi and her leadership team with little to no input from most Members of Congress. Congressman Whitfield has stated he is concerned this legislation could decrease the quality of care Kentuckians receive, hurt small business owners in the midst of an economic recession and increase the already sky-high national debt. The bill is expected to be brought to the House floor for a vote in the next few days, a little over a week after it was introduced.
